Test Types & Certification
The RSA have implemented a process for anyone wishing to become a driving instructor. The process consists of three stages. Stage one is the theory test, stage two is the driving test and the final stage is a test of the person’s ability to instruct. The stages must be passed in the order described above and passing will allow you to have your name on the ADI register.
The following shows how the ADI qualification categories relate to the licence areas in which you may instruct learners:
| Categories of Instruction Entitlement | ||||||||||||||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Membership | M | A1 | A | B | EB | C1 | C | EC1 | EC | D1 | D | ED1 | ED | W |
| A | Y | Y | Y | |||||||||||
| B | Y | Y | Y | |||||||||||
| C | Y | Y | Y | Y | Y | Y | ||||||||
| D | Y | Y | Y | Y | Y | Y | Y | |||||||
| EC | Y | Y | Y | Y | Y | Y | Y | |||||||
Prior to making a theory test appointment you must first make an application to register with the RSA ADI unit. At this time you will be required to pay a fee. When your application has been processed and approved the RSA ADI unit will advise you of an eligibility number which is used to book your test. During the application process you must advise the RSA which of the above categories you wish to instruct and they will ensure you are tested in these areas.
