The Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (Driver CPC) was introduced by the Road Safety Authority under EU directive 2003/59/EC . From 10th September 2009 all new professional Truck drivers and from10th September 2008 all new professional Bus drivers must pass the Driver CPC theory tests BEFORE applying for a Driving and Practical test. The purpose of Driver CPC is to set and maintain high standards of road safety, health and safety and driving among professional drivers (those driving for a living) of buses and trucks.
The new regulations mean that all new drivers of vehicle class C1, EC1, C and EC (Trucks), and all new drivers of vehicle class D1, ED1, D and ED (Buses) must complete and pass the Driver CPC exam, to be eligable to take a driving and practical test in their required license category.
Please note: Full Category D Licence Holders, issued to them before 9th September 2008, and Full Category Licence C Holders, issued to them before 9th September 2009, have 'Acquired Rights' and are automatically entitled to Driver CPC. Full details of the Driver CPC requirements are available from the RSA CPC Unit web site.
